Celebrate African American History Month @ HCPL

Harris County Public Library invites you and the whole family to celebrate the contributions made by African Americans to this nation's history and culture. All month long, HCPL branches will present events ranging from genealogy workshops and programs highlighting African Americans in science to crafts and storytimes, as well as musical and dramatic performances. Please join us!

Come Celebrate LSC - Tomball Community Library's 10th Anniversary!

Come celebrate Lone Star College - Tomball Community Library's 10th anniversary as a thriving partnership between Harris County Public Library and the Lone Star College System on Saturday, January 31 from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Come dressed as your favorite book character and enter our costume contest! There will also be face-painting, a magic show, and 3D printer demonstrations. So make plans to bring the whole family to help us celebrate the library and the community that makes it great.

Tax Forms and Assistance @ HCPL

If you are determined that 2015 will be the year you don’t wait until the last minute to file your federal income taxes (or even if you aren’t), Harris County Public Library will be here to help make the process as painless as we can.

But there have been some changes you need to know about, namely, that the IRS is providing a much more limited range of tax forms to libraries than in previous years. What this means is that HCPL branches will have on hand only the three basic forms: 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ.

Book Hunters in Brief #57: Celebrate the Life and Works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

January 19 is the day set aside to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We celebrate him, in part, because he was one of those rarest of individuals: a courageous man of action who knew that, in the end, the power of his words was his best weapon against injustice. Those words did the near impossible; they spurred others to action--action, it must be remembered, that entailed great personal risk for those who chose to undertake it. Such was the power of his gifts that he gave others courage and resolve they might otherwise have lacked. And his words, nearly 50 years after his assassination, still have the power to change the world. What better way to celebrate Dr. King's life and works than to read those words. Below are several suggestions from Book Hunters.

Harris County Public Library Seeks Citizenship Tutors

Would you consider helping someone become a U.S. Citizen?  A little of your time can make a huge difference.

Harris County Public Library will begin offering free citizenship classes this month.  We are in need of volunteers to help teach the classes in this program, to be held in various library locations.  Volunteers are required to attend a 3-hour HCPL Citizenship Tutor Training.  Training topics will include eligibility requirements, the citizenship process, the Naturalization test and Civics.

The initial training opportunity will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2015 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Parker Williams Branch Library, located at 10851 Scarsdale Boulevard, Suite 510, Houston, TX 77089.  For more information, or to register, call Alisha Hall at 713-749-9000 or email alisha_hall@hcpl.net.

Book Hunters in Brief #54: Unbroken

Remember that time you shushed those guys who were making all that noise during the movie when no one else was brave enough? Remember how heroic you felt? Well, Louis Zamperini, the real life hero of Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken did that, too--only it wasn't just a couple of loudmouths at the multiplex, it was the whole of Nazi Germany, and a bunch of sadistic P.O.W. camp guards. Louis Zamperini pretty much told Mr. Death himself to sit down and shut up.

NASA's ISS Exhibit Makes Final Stop at Freeman, Dec. 19 - Jan. 9

Over the last six months, NASA's International Space Station Exhibit has been orbiting the Harris County Public Library System. Today, through January 9, it makes its final HCPL stop at Clear Lake City - County Freeman Branch Library, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank Peggy Carruthers and her team at NASA for coordinating the program and giving us the chance to bring it to so many of our customers.
